Physical pain is a combination of “sensation” and “reaction.“ A common belief is that suffering mostly comes from the sensation of pain. It is actually our inner reaction that causes suffering. Our inner reaction to pain includes our thinking, our emotional response, and our physical response.
Thinking as a reaction to pain includes interpretations such as "This is getting worse", "The doctor’s have misdiagnosed the problem", "If I do this (XYZ) then the pain will get worse or better". Thinking may also include a story of our suffering, one that we will tell over and over again in our own minds or to anyone who might listen. If we do this enough we begin to live within the story.
Emotional responses to pain include internal dialogue such as, “I can’t handle this,”
“I hate this,” “Why me?” "My life is over," "I am all alone."
Physical responses to pain occur in two ways. The first is a deeply held memory in the body. This deeply held memory will cause you to over react or become hyper aware in the face of a familiar stimulus that caused the initial trauma or injury. Another kind of physical response is to constrict and tighten small and large muscles. Constriction actually worsens pain.
Mental, emotional, and physical responses dictate suffering. It is the suffering that interferes with a full and productive life. Suffering can lead to depression and resignation. Suffering can lead to frantically seeking solutions to stop the suffering. This includes over use of pain medication and risky medical interventions.
Chronic pain is epidemic in our society and yet there is very limited information about how to decrease suffering associated with pain. The methods I use to decrease and eliminate pain are leading-edge, experiential, and produce immediate results. Including coaching in your pain management plan may be the best decision you ever made. The solution is to change your inner reaction to pain.
This will eliminate the suffering.
